The Introverted Duckling

Good Morning, Lovely Day! (A breakfast to get up early for)

Have you ever stopped to look on the back of a box of cereal and read for yourself just how much sugar is in there? In a 30g bowl of Kellog's Frosties there is a whopping 11g of sugar which is the equivalent to 12% of a woman's RI. In 30g of Kellog's Coco Pops there is 10.5g of sugar which is the equivalent to 11.7% of a woman's RI. Even cereals which claim to be healthier, such as Jordan's Country Crisp, contains 10% of a woman's RI in sugar. We all know that too much sugar is bad news for our teeth, our flabby bits, and even our mood and overall health. I've been swapping sugar-loaded cereals for an alternative option for a while now and feel so much the better for it.

If you like the look of my breakfast (even though it does somewhat resemble what you might throw up after eating too many gummy bears), you will need the following:

  • One small banana, chopped

  • A handful of summer berries (I've been experimenting with strawberries and blueberries. You could just about substitute any fruit here)

  • A handful of mixed nuts (unsalted and unsweetened)

  • Three tablespoons of plain yoghurt (I substitute with soya yoghurt. You can read about the benefits of soya here: http://www.soya.be/soy-milk.php. To cut down even more on fat content, opt for a low-fat yoghurt)

  • Three tablespoons of rolled oats (a.k.a porridge oats)

  • A tablespoon of honey or agave syrup

If you're feeling lazy, or are lucky enough to have a lie-in, this filling alternative to cereal is substantial enough to be brunch, as long as you are having an early dinner. However I don't think we should be skipping meals on a regular basis. This is better eaten as early as possible to kick-start your day with lots of nutrients and energy. It will definitely keep you filled up til lunchtime.
